B i o g r a p h y

Hello there. Thanks for visiting my site! My compositions are either popular songs, modern classical music, or a mixture of the two. Influences range from my classical background as a pianist and saxophonist, to jazz and funk music, pop and rock from childhood, folk music, ambient music... you'll find a bit of everything.

For the record, I was born in 1985. I've been interested in composing for a long time. At first, my piano teacher encouraged me to improvise little intros and endings to my pieces. Later, while still at school, I formed the band Twisted Fish to write our own silly songs about amusing subjects. In 2003, I won a competition to write a piece for the Bendigo Youth Orchestra; my programmatic work, Flight of the Submarine, was premiered with guest percussionist Timothy Phillips.

In 2009 I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree in music, majoring in alto saxophone and teaching. Keen to be active in the local music scene, I played saxophone and drums with folk rockers The Light Rail and sax with hip-hop newcomers Allganiks. I also taught piano to small children and for two years, presented a late-night classical music show on 3MBS FM. One of my regular listeners was an insomniac.

I joined Canberra choir Wayfarers Australia for their 2012 world tour of Steiner schools in Australia, China, Europe and India. While on the tour I rediscovered my love of composing and wrote several songs for the choir. These were premiered in England and Scotland.

2013 was a year of intensive composing - I finished more choir pieces and wrote the bulk of my Symphony GFC. In April, I performed my first solo piano and voice gig supporting fluteboxer Warren Howden. In December, my choral piece Night Walk received its Australian premiere in Canberra.

This year, Symphony GFC was recorded by Orchestre Nouveau and released as a download on March 6, 2014. It was reviewed by Michael Shmith in The Age and is available from iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and other retailers.

Since then I've been busy completing my suite of songs for unaccompanied mixed choir. Wayfarers Australia will present a concert of my music on July 13 - for details click 'Home' above.
